Our vision, in partnership with key translation agencies, is to complete hundreds of remaining Bible translations around the world by 2020, using church-based, community-oriented translation processes. Our focus is in North India, Nepal and Bhutan.
India is a large nation with 738 heart languages and several thousand dialects (Source : SAL India Handbook 2018. The availability of Scripture in these heart languages is critical for effective communication of the Gospel. Based on available research (Ethnologue):
- Only 75 of languages of India have a complete Bible translation.
- Another 92 languages of India have only New Testaments.
- There are still several languages of India without a New Testament!
Currently, Friends of Agape is supporting work in about 60 Bible-less languages in 9 Indian states and in the neighboring countries of Nepal and Bhutan. We selected these languages based on the available data on Bible-less languages and requests from local churches. See our New Testament translation progress below in these languages with Old Testament progress listed, if applicable.
